PLUMBEOUS PIGEON

Weintaube Bird Call

Characteristics: 34 cm long and weighs approx. 207 g.  This pigeon variety has a long and wide tail.  Is plumage is almost all dark grey with light spots on the ear coverts. Its eyes are a reddish colour.
Calls: Strong four-syllable song that is composed of a higher diatonic note that is repeated approx. every 5 seconds. The Plumbeous Pigeon also has a husky and painful warning cry.
Habitat: The Plumbeous Pigeon lives in tree tops in mountainous areas and flatlands.
Distribution: This species is widespread in the Amazon region and Brazil's coastal rainforest (from Bahia in the North to Rio Grande do Sul in the South), Eastern Paraguay and Northeast Argentina.
Biology: This species feeds mainly on small fruits. Their display flights can be seen above the forests during the mating season.  The male pigeon flies high into the sky and down again in spirals before landing in a tree top.  Couples are inseparable.  Their nests are built so sloppily that the white eggs can be seen from below.  The incubation period lasts between 16 and 19 days.  The young juveniles are initially fed a cheese-like mass from the crop of the parents that is formed by both the male and female during the breeding season.
