| Biology: |
The Crimson-crested Woodpecker is usually found in pairs or in small groups of about 5 birds that scale tree trunks from the ground to just under the tree tops. Its flight is strong and undulating. The woodpecker feeds on wood-dwelling insects and their larvae, whose noises in the core of the tree can be heard by the bird. When he finds a spot that is promising, the woodpecker chips at the bark with his powerful bill until he perforates it. He then reaches into the tree with his long and pointed tongue to fetch his prey. This species can be heard making loud flight noises when pairs meet in the air during breeding time. The woodpecker broods in holes that they make in dead trees. |
