SCARLETT MACAW

Ara Bird Call

Characteristics: 89 cm long and weighs approx. 1,015g. It is a large macaw with mostly scarlet plumage and a long, pointed tail. Its wings are red, yellow and blue. Its rump and the upper part of the flight feathers are also blue.  It has a white featherless face with a beige upper mandible with a black base and a black lower mandible.  Its irises are yellow and its legs a dark green.
Calls: Raucous and penetrating rrraaaaa calls. Like other macaws, these calls are usually heard from birds during flight.
Habitat: It inhabits canopy forests and to some extent open forests with large tree populations.
Distribution: The species can be found from Southern Mexico to Colombia and across the entire Amazon region.  These birds have become rare in Central America today. 
Biology: The Scarlet Macaw feeds in the tree tops on fruits, nuts (see illustration), different types of palms, buds and on nectar.  This species is sociable and often forms flocks with other large macaws.  Pairs mate for life and always fly together.  The Scarlet Macaw broods in the hollows of large trees approx. 10 to 25 cm above the ground.  The eggs are oval in shape, white and measure 47 x 37 mm.
